Castiglion del Bosco

Montalcino - Siena

Castiglion del Bosco, known in medieval times as Castiglione sull’Ombrone, was an impressive fortification, thanks to its strategic position between Montalcino and Buonconvento. The original fortification seems to go back to about the year 1000, when the Cacciaconti
di Trequanda family had the hilltop surrounded by walls.

Today, the remains of the castle rise in the garden of a private villa, which rose by absorbing the north eastern corner of the external enclosure of the walls. The site, at the top of a 350 metre high hill, must have had the classic shape of a medieval castle enclosure. Still standing on site we can see parts of the wall, a gate and especially the broken down central tower. The hamlet is located at the foot of the fortress, a complex comprising about ten buildings, among which: the original Estate Villa, the Old Wine Cellar, the Stables, the Church of Saint Michael Archangel and its Parsonage. The respectful and skilful restoration of the ancient hamlet has allowed the creation of: twenty three luxurious suites, which vary in size from 25 to 80 sq. meters, three villas for the company members, each furnished with its own private swimming pool, a cookery school, a spa, a shop and two restaurants.
